Both shows were a success!!
Actually, I didn’t even stay to watch The Drop Outs play at Wunderbar, but if the crowd was any indication of how good the show was, then it looked f’ing sweet. Everyone was in Halloween costumes and the air smelt like stale beer and peanuts. Phil looked dashing per usual and hardly conveyed his nervousness to me when i went to wish him well. In fact i think I was more nervous to see him than he was to play. i have a petite crush on him or something.. it’s the country/farmboy/pilot appeal. anywho. The Drop Outs looked fun, but i had to leave ASAP in order to not miss…
TANYA TAGAQ + CRIS DERKSEN play at the surreal ethereal set at McDougal United Church downtown. I was honestly blown away. I told Tanya this after the show and I’ll say it again: with the huge ceilings, the 50 ft organ pipes and amazing acoustics, it felt like i was ON LSD UNDER WATER. I walked into witnessing true art in it’s rawest form. Here is a clip i recorded from the show. not teh best angle but still leaves me breathless everytime.
Part 1/2
Part 2/2
Like Bjork, Tagaq makes music that is both decidedly unusual and universally appealing on a most primal level. Her innovative, solo style of throat singing seeks to push the boundaries of emotion and to express the primitive instincts she believes still reside deep within our flesh. She describes her evolution over the past six years as a process of going deeper and deeper into her performance to the point where she virtually “leaves her body” and lets the expression take over.
the last few seconds are the best when the song ends and you get to see her big smile!
